The world’s wealthiest people got even richer last year, but the rate of growth slowed amid ongoing turmoil in the markets.

Research by the Boston Consulting Group found that the private financial wealth sector grew by 1.9% to $122.8 trillion (€991.7 million) last year, far slower than the 9.6% and 6.8% increases experienced in 2009 and 2010 respectively.

High net worth individuals in Malaysia, India, Indonesia and Thailand are not just the happiest in Asia, they are also confident of tripling their fortunes within the next 10 years.

That’s one of the findings of a survey of 2,800 rich individuals across nine countries in Asia, conducted by wealth industry consultant Scorpio Partnership.

The study found high net worth Malaysians, Indians, Indonesians and Thais as the “most content when it comes to their life-wealth balance”.

The fortunes of self-made billionaires are growing at a faster rate than the wealth of those who inherited their wealth.

That’s according to research by Societe Generale Private Banking and Forbes Insights, which found that, between 2008 and 2011, self-made billionaires saw their fortunes increase by 9%.

That’s according to a poll by investment manager SEI, which found that 80% of high net worth individuals in the US said their work ethic was either important or the most important quality behind achieving their wealth.

Mediaset, the group controlled by Silvio Berlusconi and his family, will reduce its stake in Endemol to less than 10%, as the production house attempts to restructure its €2.8 billion debt through a debt-for-equity swap.

The Netherlands-based company, which produces TV shows such as Big Brother and Deal or No Deal, said it reached an agreement in principle with more than two-thirds of its lenders that will see them reducing Endemol's debt in exchange for a stake in the business.

The wealth of the world’s millionaires jumped by $20 trillion to $89 trillion in just one year, according to research from Credit Suisse. 

The wealth of the world’s millionaires jumped by $20 trillion (€14.5 trillion) to $89 trillion in just one year, according to research from Credit Suisse.

The bank’s Global Wealth Report also found that there are 84,700 ultra-high net worth individuals, those with net assets exceeding $50 million, across the world.

Alice Walton, daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton, was arrested for drink-driving on 7 October, the day of her 62nd birthday, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Alice Walton, daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton, was arrested for drink-driving on 7 October, the day of her 62nd birthday, in Fort Worth, Texas.

According to reports in the American press, Alice spent the night in jail and was released on a $1,000 (€725) bond.

Through her lawyer, the family business heiress apologised. “She accepts full responsibility for this unfortunate incident and deeply regrets it,” he said.

Mexican business website Sentidocomun said the telecoms tycoon was worth about US$62 billion, at the end of September, down from US$78 in June, the Financial Times reported.
