This has been the traditional profile of Indian family investments, dominated by senior wealth holders with a preference for safe and steady assets. Fuelled by operating businesses where any profits have been funnelled back into the business, diversification has traditionally meant investing in subsidiaries of the family business or real estate, rather than new asset classes. Yet could a new breed of family investors with a desire to professionalise private investment be set to break this mould?

Indian authorities reject Ambani sibling spectrum deal

The future of telecommunications operator Reliance Communications (RCom), owned by billionaire tycoon Anil Ambani (pictured), has been thrown into confusion after Indian authorities refused to approve a spectrum sale deal to Reliance Jio (Jio), the company owned by Anil’s brother Mukesh Ambani.

India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) told RCom it could not sell its spectrum to rival Jio as the proposed deal did not conform to its guidelines.

The world’s first study on India’s nascent family office space, released by Campden Research today, found more than half (58%) of Indian families surveyed were interested in setting up, or joining, a family office to manage, preserve and grow their wealth. Half (50%) said they were in the process of establishing their own family office.

The world’s 2,158 billionaires collectively increased their wealth by $1.4 trillion last year to $8.9 trillion—the largest absolute increase in billionaire wealth history.

A total of 199 billionaires were created over the year globally, with nearly one-third gaining their wealth through some form of innovation.
